New software designed facilitate the evolution of sites like Facebook and Twitter

Microsoft aims to harness social networking

Microsoft is set to launch a social network aggregator tool called Spindex, which will funnel content from services like Facebook and Twitter into a single personalised area, and make them work together more efficiently.

Initial iterations of the software include Bling Twitter Maps, which shows the geographical position of individual Tweets, and Docs for Facebook, which facilitates file sharing on the site.

Spindex is currently in beta as is available to download, and Microsoft claims it has ‘just began to scratch the surface of what’s possible,’ and that the transformation of social media will have vast implications for the internet.

"Today’s social networks are powerful and compelling, but they’re just the beginning of a broader transformation that will likely change every aspect of the Web," the firm said through an offical blog. "One area we’ve been focused on lately is the personalization of social computing. As you increasingly tweet, post to Facebook, and capture ideas with tools like Evernote, we want to help you get the most out of your social activity by exposing the right information, at the right time, in a way that’s meaningful."
