Smartphone shipments reached 55.2 million in the first quarter of the year, representing a 67 per cent year-on-year increase.
According to Canalys, Nokia took a 38.8 per cent market share with 21.4 million shipments, followed by RIM’s 19.2 per cent (10.6 million) and Apple’s 15.9 per cent (8.8 million).
HTC came fourth with a market share of 5.1 per cent based on 2.8 million shipments, followed by Motorola’s 4.7 per cent with 2.6 million.
"For the first time, touch-screens represented over 50 per cent of Nokia’s smart phone shipments this quarter, which were historically dominated by the keypad-based candy bar form factors," said Canalys’ Chris Jones.
