Android will be installed on 24 per cent of all tablet devices that ship this year, according to a new report from IMS Research.
The report warns that Google is offering a strong alternative to Apple’s iPad, as rival manufacturers ramp up their plans.
"Suppliers are realizing the importance of content and service and many are turning to the Android ecosystem to be able to offer the complete user experience and compete with Apple’s offering," author Anna Hunt writes.
IMS also claims that Microsoft’s Windows 7 shouldn’t be written off in the tablet market, accounting for 10 per cent of shipments this year.
IMS predicts that from 2012, more than half the tablets sold each year will be distributed by mobile operators and ISPs, bundling them in with service plans.
