Figures increase for eight week in a row

High street sales continue to rise

The sunny weather continued to provide a boost to the high street, with sales rising for the eighth consecutive week this year, according to analysts.

Figures from the BDO High Street Sales Tracker for the week ending 14th March show overall sales up 10 per cent on the same week last year.

Following a couple of lacklustre weeks, non-fashion – including PCs and electronics – was the best performing sector, up 16.8 per cent, with many stores reporting strong results due to Mother’s Day.

Don Williams, head of retail at BDO said: "The fine spring weather seems to have put most consumers in a good frame of mind with worries over future tax increases and unemployment certainly not playing on their minds.

"However, we might see sales figures fall back after next week’s Budget announcement. If consumers receive a wake-up call to the belt-tightening that will happen across the board when the next Government announces its plans to reduce the UK’s deficit, it may affect their desire to dig in to their wallets on the high street."
