Top selling laptop proves to be not such a great deal...

?40 PC is not so cheap

Readers of last month’s issue will have noticed a piece by ITACS chairman Matthew Woolley touching on the dubious nature of free and ultra-cheap PC offers. Well, this month’s top selling laptop is a prime example of this kind of deal.

HP’s G61-110SA can be found on offer at certain outlets for as little as £39.99, which is an amazing price. Except that the purchase comes with a tied-in two-year mobile broadband internet contract at £35 per month. Two years and £875 later, it doesn’t look like such a good deal.

This is by no means a slight against the G61 – it offers a good 15.4-inch screen supported by a respectable 2.1GHz Intel Pentium T4300 with four GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive, making it a good entry level machine for the light user.

From low value to high value, PNY’s GeForce GTS 250 is our top selling graphics card this month. For a sub-£100 price point this card has a surprisingly wide range of features. At a basic level this is a 738MHz core clock GPU with 512MB of DDR3 buffer cache. However, the device also features triple SLI bridge support, dual monitor or HD TV support, Blu-ray decoding, and the ability to channel audio via an audio loop cable.

Followers of our security chart will notice that Symantec’s Norton 360 has lost its unchallenged position at the top of the ladder, supplanted by Symantec’s Antivirus 2010. Unlike 360, Antivirus 2010 only offers a single install per purchase and offers a stripped down version of the protection offered by its sibling software. It includes core protection, a basic firewall and system optimisation.
