EU battery law now in force

An EU law was implemented yesterday that will see all retailers who sell batteries providing recycling bins as part of a drive to reduce landfill volumes.

According to ERT Online, any retailer that sells more than 32 kilogram’s a year of batteries – around one pack of AA batteries per day – must comply with the law.

It is estimated that around 30,000 tonnes of batteries enter the UK market each year, 97 per cent of which end up in landfill. This latest directive aims to significantly cut this proportion and reduce the requirement for new batteries.
