3D is the word of the moment at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, where most major vendors have announced new products featuring the technology.
Sony’s keynote speech at the event in Las Vegas focused heavily on 3D. The firm said that this summer it will be introducing a range of compatible Bravia LCD TVs and Blu-ray players, with 3D VAIO PCs and digital still cameras also planned for this year.
Samsung and Toshiba both announced new Blu-ray players with 3D support. Samsung’s BD-6900 is compatible with its new range of high-definition 3D TVs, and comes with a transparent cover so users can see the disk spin as it plays.
Tim Baxter, president of the consumer electronics division at Samsung Electronics America, said: “There has been great success with 3D in theaters, and the stars have finally aligned to bring this experience to the home with combination of standardisation, plenty of product options and 3D content.”
Toshiba’s BDX3000 Blu-ray device, which will ship in Q3, features online connectivity for streaming movies, as well as 3D capability.
Panasonic, meanwhile, used CES to unveil its five VT25 HDTVs, which range in size from 50- to 65-inches and feature new phosphor science that apparently gives the TV a smoother 3D image.
“Panasonic is bringing the last frontier of television into the home. We’ve gone from black and white to colour to digital to high definition. Now with 3D, Panasonic is making television more realistic. 3D has proven quite successful in its theatrical form and we are confident that will successfully translate into the consumer electronics arena," said Bob Perry, senior vice president of Panasonic Consumer Electronics.
LG announced its W2363D monitor, which allows consumers to enjoy 3D picture quality for gaming and entertainment viewing.
