Software developer ABBYY has released FineReader 10, an optical character recognition (OCR) package for individuals and businesses, which turns scanned documents and images into editable text.
The software transforms documents into Microsoft Word and Excel files or searchable PDFs, with up to 99 per cent accuracy. Its adaptive document recognition technology allows users to access information locked on paper, unsearchable PDFs and digital images.
Format points such as tables of contents, hierarchical headings, footnotes, page numbers, captions and font styles are carried over into the new document, eliminating the need for retyping or reformatting.
FineReader’s Advanced Digital Camera OCR for standard and mobile cameras recognises digital photos of documents, using enhanced image- correction and processing facilities to improve noise, blurriness and distortion.
Its language detection and intelligent proofreading tools save users from manually processing files. Pre-defined ‘Quick Tasks’ automatically do most typical OCR jobs by converting documents directly from Microsoft Office.
Documents can be saved as searchable PDFs or PDF/As and protected with passwords or compressed to a file size of 1:10.
