Music streaming specialist cites huge demand since the launch of its mobile service

Spotify reverts to invite-only model

Spotify has re-initiated the invite-only business model for its free music streaming service, after being inundated with huge demand following the launch of its mobile application.

“I wanted to quickly let everyone know that due to the huge demand in the UK over the last few days since we launched our mobile service, we are going to have to temporarily reinstate our invite system in the UK,” said Spotify’s global community manager, Andres Sehr in his blog. “We are invite-only in all our other launch countries but we hope to be able to remove the need for an invite again very soon.”

Unfortunately, Sehr was not able to specify how long the invite-only system will in place for.

As it stands, the only way to sign up for a free Spotify account is to be invited by a friend who holds a premium account with the service. Those who have not been invited must submit their names to a waiting list, although any new customers signing up for a premium account will have their applications processed as normal.
