Software giant encourages people to ?Be part of Windows history"

Microsoft asks consumers to throw Windows 7 parties

If you’re thinking of throwing a party in late October, it might be for Halloween, or possibly a birthday, but what about for the launch of Windows 7?

Microsoft has teamed up with marketing event organisers House Party to encourage US consumers to “Be part of Windows history. Host a Windows 7 Launch Party” in the week following the operating system’s launch on 22 October.

"You host the party. We’ll bring the favors," the promotion’s web page says. Those chosen to host the celebrations will receive a free Signature Edition of Windows 7 Ultimate and a Windows 7 Party Pack based on one of four themes: PhotoPalooza, Media Mania, Setting up with Ease and Family Friendly Fun.

Hosts are encouraged to upload photos and videos, chat with other hosts and blog about their experience. They also have the chance to win a PC worth $750.

In June 2008 Mozilla encouraged users to host “download parties” for the launch of its Firefox 3 internet browser, and reportedly recorded over 8 million downloads of the browser in one day.
