Device to compete with Amazon Kindle

Sony reveals wireless e-book reader

Sony has unveiled its new wireless reader for e-books and electronic newspapers, which lets users download reading material on the move.

The Reader Daily Edition, which is wireless with 3G connectivity, is the third model in Sony’s Reader series. Users can download books and selected newspapers and magazines through Sony’s e-book store, and additional content can be loaded through a USB connection.

The device will be in competition with Amazon’s Kindle wireless e-reader, which has many of the same features. However, unlike the Kindle, the Daily Edition has a seven-inch touch screen that can be viewed in either portrait or landscape.

“We firmly believe consumers should have choice in every aspect of their digital reading experience,” said Steve Haber, president of Sony’s Digital Reading Business Division. “Today, we take another large stride to deliver on that promise.”

The Reader Daily Edition will be available in the US from December for around $399.
