Analyst predicts 32.7m units to be sold during 2009

Netbook sales to double

DisplaySearch has revised its global shipment estimates for netbooks upwards, after it said sales had risen sharply due to continued price erosion and increasing specifications.

The market research firm had previously said it predicted 27.5m units would be shipped during the year, up from 16.4m in 2008. However, according to director of laptop research at DisplaySearch, John Jacobs, it now estimates 32.7m units will be shipped.

He added that figures suggest that netbooks are cannibalising sales of full laptops, with shipments figures expected to remain flat at 129.5m units.
