The channel has questioned the pulling power of terabyte hard drives after the devices broke what it describes as the affordability milestone earlier this year.
Speaking to PC Retail about the current state of the storage market, M2M’s marketing manager Hitesh Kothary warned that it is currently unclear whether 2TB, 3TB and so on will have the same impact.
"Psychologically, consumers who have high storage needs wanted to see an affordable 1TB solution, but now they have that, it is unclear what impact 1.5TB and 2TB drives will have," he suggested.
VIP’s storage product manager Darren Jackson agrees, believing capacity is becoming less important and that price has become the deciding factor: "Hard drive capacities have not changed significantly in the last 12 months, but the average selling price has dropped substantially."
He added that it was this decrease that brought 1TB drives into the price range of most customers, albeit at the high end.
