Growing trend for multiple graphics cards fuels growth

22.5 per cent growth in GPU market

The GPU market has seen year-on-year growth of 22.5 per cent and 18 per cent growth over the last quarter, according to estimates from Jon Peddie Research.

The trend towards multiple GPU’s saw 111 million units shipped in the last quarter and over a third of all PCs are now being shipped with more than one graphics card.

Intel and AMD have been the primary beneficiaries of this growth. Intel now holds just under half the market with a 49.4 per cent market share, up from 47.3 per cent last quarter, while AMD claimed 20.6 per cent of the market from 18.1 per cent in the previous quarter.

Nvidia was the sectors only major player that didn’t report any growth. The firm saw its market share drop from 31.4 per cent to just 27.8 per cent in the quarter ending September 30th.

“The third quarter is seasonally up as OEMs place orders for chips to build inventory for the holiday season,” commented Dr. Jon Peddie.

“However, this quarter was up more than any other for some time, and in spite of suggestions of a recession that started last Q4. Desktops increased seasonally and notebooks enjoyed quite significant gains.”
