Gartner's Steve Prentice suggests alternative control methods will rise to take its place

Analyst: ‘The mouse will be dead in five years’

An analyst has predicted that within five years, mice will be restricted to desktop systems as it becomes obsolete for use with home entertainment systems and laptops.

Gartner analyst Steve Prentice said that while: "the mouse works fine in the desktop environment but for home entertainment or working on a notebook, it’s over."

Suggesting that the paradigm of using a keyboard and mouse together is one that must be broken, Prentice says that he sees interfaces such as facial recognition systems, multi-touch and mind reading devices taking over from the mouse.
