Russia looks to tighten internet borders

Key Russian government officials are attempting to pass strict internet censorship legislation, which would force ISPs to shut down domestic sites and block foreign ones sites that contain ‘extremist material.’

Similar laws already exist for the country’s traditional media, but this will be the first move attempting to put the internet under the same restrictions. This could reportedly happen within a month.

This follows the news that the authorities will require the registration of every wi-fi device in the country, such as PDAs and smart phones. A set of government documents will be required for every single wireless point.
