Prices reach all-year high, as the format enjoys monopoly in the high definition market

Blu-ray prices soar

Samsung, Sony and Sharp are selling Blu-ray players for the highest prices all year, following what is generally considered the demise of rival format HD-DVD, according to a price comparison on Tom’s Hardware.

Advocate vendors of Blu-ray dropped prices of players earlier this year, in a move which put further pressure on the HD-DVD format. The price of Blu-ray players fell below $300 for a standalone player during this period – however now the average price is now around $400.

Meanwhile, prices of HD-DVD players still on the market continue to plummet – representing a significant price gap between the two formats.
