Sony's commercial director says entering market could help CE retailers

Benson ? ‘AV retailers should sell PCs’

Sony’s commercial director has said that he expects consumer electronics could perform beyond expectations thanks to the continued growth of IT products such as its Vaio range of laptops.

Andy Benson made the statement at the company’s key dealer launch, which is currently taking place in Dubai. He said that the continued strong demand for laptops would likely help to boost overall sales of consumer electronics, which are expected to be flat this year.

"Some people are predicting there may be no overall growth in our industry and that this year could be flat but IT is still looking strong – maybe 20 per cent growth in volume and a 10 per cent growth in value," he said.

Benson also stressed the benefits of moving into PC retailing to AV retailers attending the event. "Products have become so connected that part of the benefit they can show is the migration from AV to IT."

It was a sentiment echoed by Sony UK’s managing director, Steve Dowdle: "If you put IT and AV together – which is what we’re trying to encourage – then the outlook’s not so bad."

He also stressed the importance of emphasising the ‘connected home’ as part of the sale, ask key to linking sales of IT and AV equipment.
