HP, Acer and Toshiba all make ground on market leader

Dell stumbles in UK

HP, Acer and Toshiba all increased their market share during the fourth quarter in the UK at the expense of market leader Dell, according to the latest figures from Canalys.

The UK market grew, but at a rate that was slower than expected. Total shipments during the fourth quarter grew 7.6 per cent to 3.5 million units.

However, laptop shipments continued to outperform, as recent market updates by retailers have suggested, with them seeing market growth of 30 per cent.

Toshiba was the biggest gainer, with it seeing its market share increase by three per cent to nine per cent. HP also saw its market share increase to 22 per cent, putting it on par with Dell.

However, it wasn’t a good quarter for the market leader, with it seeing its share drop by two per cent. Acer also did well during the quarter, seeing its market share reach 18 per cent, leaving it just four points behind Dell.

Speaking about the figures, Andy Buss, principal analyst at Canalys, said: "It was a bit less than we were expecting as we had anticipated double-figure growth. It does lead to an uncertain start to 2008, but it was a good healthy year for the channel overall."
