Steve Jobs unveils new software and hardware during MacWorld keynote address

Apple introduces world?s thinnest notebook

Apple has today announced its ultra-thin, ultra-portable notebook – the MacBook Air.

Air weighs in at under 1.4 kilos and is just 0.76 inches at its widest part, and 0.16 inches at its thinnest. Aside from being ridiculously thin, the notebook also has a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display, 1.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of Ram, 80GB hard disk, multi-touch track pad, a built-in iSight video camera and up to five hours worth of battery life.

“We’ve built the world’s thinnest notebook – without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or full-size 13-inch display,” said Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple. “When you first see MacBook Air, it’s hard to believe it’s a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display. But it is.”

The MacBook Air is to retail for £1,199 ($2,358).

During his keynote address, Jobs also announced five new mobile applications for the iPod touch: Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather and Notes. The software update also comes with new features such as web clips and a customisable home screen. This update is available to purchase and download through iTunes for £12.99 ($25).

Not content to stop there, Jobs went on to confirm the new iTunes Digital Copy. This new service is created in conjunction with 20th Century Fox, and provides customers who purchase a DVD with a free iTunes Digital Copy of the movie. iTunes Digital Copy will premier with the Family Guy’s Star Wars spoof: Blue Harvest.

“DVDs containing an iTunes Digital Copy allow movie fans to get a copy of their movie which can be viewed on a computer, iPod, iPhone or on Apple TV,” said Jobs.

Finally, Jobs announced Time Capsule, which can automatically and wirelessly back up everything from one or more Macs that are running Apple’s latest operating system, Leopard.

The 500GB Time Capsule is to retail for £199 ($391), with the 1TB model set to retail at £329 ($647).
