Microsoft to run strip down version of OS on XO notebooks

OLPC notebook to feature XP

The Richmond based giant confirmed today that it is field testing a stripped down version of Microsoft XP on OLPC’s XO notebooks.

"We want Windows to run on the XO and we are investing significant energy and talent," said general manager of Microsoft’s unlimited potential group, James Utzschneider. "However, we really want to make sure we have a quality experience before we make any commitment to governments."

This follows news that sales are heating up, including a recent order from Peru for 260,000 XO notebooks, after a troubled start for the One Laptop Per Child foundation. Production costs have forced the XO to rise from $100 per unit to $188, whereas a patent infringement was filed in Nigeria against the OLPC, because of technology used in XO keyboards.
