South Korean vendor prepares huge cash injection into its eighth-generation production line

Samsung plunges $2 billion into LCD expansion

Samsung Electronics is to invest 2.06 trillion won ($2.2 billion) into expanding its eighth-generation LCD range, to meet growing demand for large flat-screen TVs.

The vendor aims to make panels for TVs with 46-inch and 52-inch screens, a size traditionally dominated by plasma screens.

Samsung told the Wall Street Journal that it believes TVs of over 50-inches will grow by 65 per cent over the next three years, and will begin its investment in 2008.

However Sony, who had been co-operating with Samsung over LCD production, will not be investing into the expansion.
