Google rumoured to be considering mid-2008 debut for mobile software.

Gphone announcement imminent?

Reports this morning suggest that Google will make some sort of open source OS available to handset manufacturers, bundled with various apps and services.

No official word for the search giant yet, but the Wall Street Journal makes it clear its sources are pretty close to the project, which it says will be announced publicly within two weeks. HTC and LG are cited by the Journal as possible Gphone partners.

Google has involved itself in mobile quite extensively during the last 12 months, whether its putting search boxes on operator portals, offering a Gmail app, Docs, or pushing its YouTube video channel.
