Chip maker applies for extension to respond to antitrust allegations

Intel asks EU for more time

Intel has asked for more time to respond to allegations levelled against it by the European Commission, an official for the European Union’s executive arm said yesterday.

"We have received a request for an extension from Intel and it is still under consideration," said the official. The case is looking at whether or not Intel slashed prices to below cost and offered huge rebates in an illegal attempt to put competitor AMD out of business.

The Commission had been expecting a response yesterday but it is unclear what measures it will take if it refused Intel further time.
