HD DVD camp say PS3 Blu-ray exclusivity won't harm its market share

Handbags out in HD war (again)

The recent decline in the cost of the PS3 will not prompt consumers to begin buying Blu-ray movies, says a spokesperson form the European HD DVD Promotional Group.

The EHPG added that external HD DVD drives for the Xbox 360 will become increasingly common in the near future, saying that while Blu-ray drives in the PS3 could not be accurately be included as not all owners use it for watching movies, the Xbox 360 unit can be since it is only used for watching HD DVD movies.

Microsoft has repeatedly stated that is has no intentions to launch an Xbox 360 with a built in next-gen optical drive.

The EHPG drew on some figures released by market analyst’s GfK, that portray HD DVD as the dominant force, commanding no less that 70 per cent of the market. The figures however will not disguise the fact that the Blu-ray camp is growing.

In other news announced recently the Blu-ray camp have launched a promotion, where anyone buying a Blu-ray player, including a PS3 can mail the Blu-ray disc Association in order to obtain five free Blu-ray movies.
