Testifying at the Capitol Records, et al v. Jammie Thomas case, Jennifer Pariser, the head of litigation for record label Sony BMG, said "When an individual makes a copy of a song for himself, I suppose we can say he stole a song."
Quoted on tech site ars technica, Pariser added that making ‘a copy’ of a purchased song is just "a nice way of saying ‘steals just one copy’." The site goes on to point out that, given that most music stored on MP3 players is essentially copied from CDs, that makes us all thieves by this definition.
The case is one of the first file sharing legal actions to make it as far as the court and could set some interesting precedents for copyright law.
