The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has said that concerns over threats to net neutrality are a non-issue and that current anti-trust laws provide adequate protection against abuses of network power.
In a statement given to lawyers, FTC chairwoman Deborah Platt Majoras said that concerns over net neutrality were a not justified and that calls for the area to be formally regulated were unnecessary.
Content providers and online retailers have voiced their concerns over the threat of a tiered-network in which those with cash can pay internet service providers (ISPs) more money to make their sites load faster than those who don’t.
The worry is that if the practise every came to fruition, larger content providers and retailers would be forced to pay in order to compete. Other smaller content providers and retailers would be left with slower loading sites – raising the potential for customers to be driven away.
Many big names, including Google, have already vocally stated any move towards a tiered network by ISPs would see it launch anti-trust cases against them.
