Office of fair trading uncovers the truth behind internet shopping

A quarter of etailers don’t know the rules

28 per cent of online retailers are unaware or only slightly aware of the laws governing trading on the web, the Channel Register revealed in a review of an OFT study into shopping over the internet.

"While 56 per cent of internet shoppers surveyed did not know about their right to cancel under the Distance Selling Regulations, 29 per cent did not know where to turn to get advice on their rights," said the site.

The report, entitled Internet Shopping, uncovers a significant level of ignorance among all participants in the ecommerce environment, with shoppers failing to shop around effectively and many etailers not adhering to basic ecommerce regulations such as providing an email address.

"The OFT said it will announce a strategy by the end of 2007 to raise awareness of shoppers’ rights, as well as other issues such as effective search, risks, redress and protections," reported Channel Register.
