ITACS (the Independent Trade Association of Computing Specialists) has launched a double barrelled initiative intended to convince the government of what it sees as the unfair way small IT retailers are effected by the controversial WEEE regulations.
The trade body has organised two e-petitions, one aimed at the trade and one for members of the public. It is hoped that if enough people sign, the government will be forced to recognise the opposition to the law and the plight many small retailers find themselves in because of it.
The trade e-petition can be found at www.itacs.org.uk/weee, while the public version is at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/weee-plead. The move is supported by NASCR, The PCA and the Mac Association.
“The two petitions are intended to put pressure on the Government to re-evaluate the disproportionate cost burden of the recently introduced WEEE Regulations that leave the small retailers at a huge competitive disadvantage,” said ITACS secretary Hendy Armstrong. “ITACS would rather have discussed these matters in full with the DTI but its reticence has given no other option.
“Our business petition, for IT retailers, distributors, vendors and business customers, will highlight not only the demand for re-consideration but also the average of the population opinion of the expected consequences of the implemented framework. Our public petition launched on the Prime Minister’s e-petition page is to give our public customers the opportunity to express support for our change campaign.”
