The direct model giant has discontinued its Axim line of pocket PCs, which has been around since 2002 through various incarnations.
In August Dell announced it was abandoning its PDA development, leaving the Axim X51 alone in the handheld space.
The firm’s first handheld was powered by Microsoft’s Pocket PC 2002 operating system and despite receiving criticism for its somewhat heavy weight it earned praise for being relativly inexpensive.
Many are attributing the abandonment of the Axim range down to the rise of the Smartphone, which has damaged the standalone PDA.
"As you know the market for pen based PDAs has been steadily declining for several quarters, and so Dell is not going to offer a follow on product at this time," Dell’s Anne Camden told DailyTech. "As for Smartphone, Dell has not announced plans to enter this market, and does not comment on product roadmaps. We do offer an assortment of third party handhelds, including GPS devices and unlocked Smartphones, from leading manufacturers that feature the latest technology."
