Antivirus and maintenance software package is offered to the US market for a cool $50 a year

Microsoft takes on security market

Microsoft has boldly decided to take on the extremely competitive security software market with the launch of its Windows Live OneCare all-in-one, automatic and self-updating PC care service.

“Windows Live OneCare delivers what millions of consumers have been asking for: one source for top-to-bottom maintenance, support and performance optimization tools plus increased protection that takes the worry out of PC care,” said Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect at Microsoft.

The full feature set consists of:
Protection Plus – anti-virus, firewall and spyware
Performance Plus – PC maintenance
Backup and Restore – data backup and restoring functionality
Help and Support – live help

There will clearly be demand for a such a product due to the unique access Microsoft has to the inner workings of Windows, but not all consumers will welcome the opportunity to pay $50 for features many think should be an intrinsic part of Windows already.
