Living wage is £7.65 per hour outside of the UK

Utopia Computers becomes first indie to offer living wage for employees

Utopia Computers has become the first computer manufacturer officially accredited as a Living Wage Employer.

The company is the first within Scotland to offer its staff members the living wage and possibly the UK.

The accreditation has been awarded by the Living Wage Foundation and guarantees that all of the company’s staff will receive at least the living wage.

The UK living wage for outside of London is currently £7.65 per hour, which is 49 per cent higher than the UK minimum wage for under 21s and 18 per cent higher for over 21s.

Julie McGahan, programme manager for the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative, said: “Utopia Computers are leading the way in Scotland by joining the Living Wage Employer movement.

“As well as being the first Living Wage Employer in Kilmarnock, they are the first computer manufacturer in Scotland to make this commitment to their staff.”

Mark Laurie, director at Utopia, urged other companies to follow suit and invest in their staff.

"This will both retain talent and raise the profile of this important issue," he said.

The Living Wage Foundation is also aiming to have 1,000 accredited employers by Living Wage Week in November, which runs from November 2nd to November 8th.
