Microsoft to update older software with modern security protection.

Office 2003 to get ?07 treatment

Global software giant Microsoft has stated that the upcoming Service Pack 3 for Office 2003 will ‘backport’ some of the security improvements found in its more recent 2007 software.

Channel Register reports that customised attacks targeting Word and PowerPoint are on the rise, upping the need for regular security updates.

"We’re trying to take what we learned from building Office 2007 and bring as much as we can to Office 2003," said Microsoft’s technical product manager Joshua Edwards. "We’re not going to take everything, but we will take as much as we can.”

Users are reporting that the Office 2007 has to date proved far more secure than its 2003 predecessor.
