BBC receives 950,000 iPlayer requests on a single day

London 2012 Olympics is a BBC record breaker

The BBC received 1.7 million iPlayer requests for the London 2012 Opening Ceremony.

Of all the iPlayer requests, 950,000 were on Saturday – a new record for a single day on the BBC’s catch up TV platform.

The weekend also saw the BBC Sport site break UK and global records with 6.1 million UK browsers and 8.3 million global browsers. “This is the biggest audience the Sport website has ever seen," commented Cait O’Riordan, head of product for BBC Sport.

“Just after 3pm on Saturday afternoon we had all our encoders in action playing 24 live video streams of sporting action across desktop, mobile tablet, connected TVs and Red Button.”

“We’ve been gratified to see such positive feedback, on social networks and via email, about the things we have built,” added O’Riordan.

On Friday the BBC announced that its Olympics mobile app had generated 500,000 downloads on iPhone and Android. This increased to 1.15 million over the weekend.

Almost 27 million viewers tuned in live on Friday to watch the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, beating the amount that tuned in for last year’s royal wedding.
