A New Zealand High Court judge has said the warrant used to raid Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom’s house was invalid.
File-sharing website Megaupload was shut down, and Dotcom and four others were arrested in January this year, whilst his assets were frozen, including cars, computers and art.
"The warrants did not adequately describe the offences to which they related," said High Court judge Justice Helen Winkelmann. She commented: "They were general warrants, and as such, are invalid."
She also deemed that the FBI’s actions to copy data and take it offshore to the US was unlawful.
New Zealand police are now in discussion with Crown Law "to determine what further action might be required".
Kim Dotcom is currently on bail.
