GeForce GTX 1080 Ti leaked specs put it in Titan X territory

it is widely expected that Nvidia will unveil a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card over the coming months, but leaked specs have revealed that the card will be almost as powerful as the Titan X.

According to a forum post at OC3D, the 1080 Ti will share the same GP102 GPU with the Titan X and will possess 52 streaming multiprocessor units (down from the Titan X’s 56), along with 3,328 CUDA cores (only slightly shy off the Titan X’s 3,584).

If these specs are to be believed the 1080 Ti will be significantly more powerful than the standard 1080.

The 1080 Ti is clocked faster than the Titan X with base and boost clock speeds of 1,503MHz and 1,623MHz, respectively, compared to 1,417MHz and 1,531MHz. This all means that the 1080 Ti has 10.8 TFLOPs of power, just under the Titan X’s fabled 11 TFLOPs.

This is not all to say that the 1080 Ti is a Titan X killer, however. The Titan X still has a significant advantage over the leaked card’s memory bandwidth. The 1080 Ti has 12GB of GDDR5 memory on a 384-bit bus pushing 384GB/s while the Titan X has the same amount of memory on the same bus, but pushes 480GB/s on a faster GDDR5X chip. It might be a bit slower on the memory, but the 1080 Ti is still a lot quicker than the vanilla GTX 1080, which uses 8GB of GDDR5X memory on a 256-bit bus to achieve 320GB/s.

There has been speculation as to the validity of the leak off the back of this chip change, as it seems an odd backwards step for Nvidia to swap GDDR5X for GDDR5. This might seem curious, but it makes sense that Nvidia would not want to hurt sales of the Titan X by creating a graphics card with similar specs and a cheaper price point.

There has been no comment from Nvidia on the leak, but it is widely expected that the new card will be shown off at CES in January. We’ll have to wait until then to see whether these specs are anywhere near to what we get then.
