Cost is in between the 16GB and 32GB iPad

E-tailers date Samsung Galaxy Tab for October launch with ?551 price tag

British e-tailers have dated the Samsung Galaxy Tab Android-powered tablet for an October launch, with the lowest price just over £550.

The More Group has a dedicated Samsung webstore at moresamsung.co.uk, which is currently offering the lowest price of £551.04, quoting an October 15th ‘restock date’.

Meanwhile, Insight has listed the Galaxy Tab for an October 22nd launch at a price of £587.

Amazon’s listing agrees with Samsung’s officially announced launch date of November 1st, at a price of £599.

At this price the 16GB, 3G equipped Galaxy Tab is still £20 more than an equivalent Apple iPad, £15 with More’s postage, although adding a 16GB card would be cheaper than the 32GB 3G iPad.

Speculation has been rife concerning the price point of the first serious competitor to the iPad with Samsung doing little to clear matters up other than denying the initial £799 listing on Amazon. Even though the Galaxy Tab is a smaller device than the iPad, the Android OS has been regarded my many manufacturers not yet suitable for tablets.

Samsung has admitted that some applications are going present strangely as the higher resolution screen packs in more pixels than the standard highest resolution displays of Android smartphones. Samsung has reworked some of the common applications to run well natively but incompatibilities are likely to spring up with apps downloaded from the Market.
