Retailers could face problems unless they make customers aware of memory card compatibility issues.

Catalus gives warning to retailers

Specialist memory card distributor Catalus has said that many new high capacity 4GB cards are being sold to consumers who are unaware that they are not compatible with devices over six months old. The firm has urged retailers to make customers aware of the incompatibility issues, or face a large number of product returns and customer dissatisfaction.

”As the price of flash memory falls, retailers are stocking increasingly high capacity cards, additional storage for photos, music and data,” said Jon Blows, general manager of Catalus. “But there is a danger in selling these products without giving the right advice. These 4GB cards are only compatible with specific SDHC* compatible devices which are normally those manufactured in the last six months, whether that’s a camera, phone, gaming device or video recorder.

“A simple message at PoS, or advice from a sales assistant is what’s needed to prevent consumers being disappointed,” he continued. “I would urge retailers to make their staff aware of this issue to avoid significant product returns and customer dissatisfaction.”
