As BlackBerry hopes to force its way into the smartphone market with its new operating system BB10, its attempt will no doubt be damaged by its lack of one of the world’s most popular apps.
It is reported that Instagram has no plans to produce a native version of its photo-sharing app for the BB10 operating system.
Tech site AllThingsD first broke the news, quoting an unnamed source familiar with the situation as saying: "There will be no [native] Instagram for BB10 for now. Frankly, I’m not sure there will ever be."
Despite launching just last month, BB10 has already seen its issues over its app store and the number of apps on offer.
Following the launch of the firm’s new OS, BlackBerry’s VP of global alliances and business development, Martyn Mallick, told reporters: "40 per cent of BB10 apps are wrapped Android applications."
Today’s news will serve a further blow to BlackBerry as consumers look for reasons as to why they should adopt the new OS and one of the firm’s newly released smartphones.
Whilst Instagram will likely make its way to the OS as a port of the Android app, these are typically less user-friendly than native apps and can often lead to a number of additional bugs and issues.
However, whistle lacking the support of Instagram, BlackBerry has managed to get its hands on a number of other popular apps, including the likes of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
