Xbox boss Mattrick quits Microsoft for Zynga

Xbox boss Don Mattrick has left Microsoft and joined social games company Zynga as CEO.

He starts work at Zynga on Monday, July 8th.

Mattrick (left) takes the CEO role from Mark Pincus, the founder of Zynga. But Pincus (right) will remain deeply involved in the firm as chairman of the board and chief product officer.

“Don is unique in the game business,” said Pincus. “He can execute in multiple domains – hardware, software and network, and he’s been the person responsible for game franchises like Need for Speed, FIFA and The Sims."

Mattrick was part of a team that grew the Xbox 360 installed base to 75 million, but was recently caught in a gamer furore over the Xbox One strategy for game licensing and ownership.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer thanked Mattrick for his work at Xbox, but hasn’t yet named a successor to the role.
