Smashes previous Burning Crusade sales record

WoW Catalysm sells 4.7 million in first month

Blizzard Entertainment announced that the latest expansion for the hugely popular massively multiplayer World of Warcraft has sold more than 4.7 million copies in the first month, setting a new record for monthly PC game sales.

Having been released simultaneously across the US, Europe and Southeast Asia on the 7th of December, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm represents a must-buy add-on for millions of WoW fans worldwide so it’s unsurprisingly the release of the latest expansion has sold by the millions.

However the one day sales record of 3.3 million units on the first day crushed the previous record held by the prior expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, demonstrating that the 6 year-old game has lost little of its appeal, perhaps benefiting from the relative demise of the PC gaming platform as publishers shifted attention towards the console market.

"We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore, and extensively revamped the game world for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet," said Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime,

"We’ve been floored by the community’s response so far, and we’d like to thank them for their continued passion and support for World of Warcraft, and for helping Cataclysm reach this incredible milestone."

Blizzard said that prior to the launch of Cataclysm, World of Warcraft had more than 12 million players.
