Indian IT developers have put together what they claim is the world’s cheapest laptop – a touchscreen device costing just $35.
India's Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal unveiled the computer this week, Reuters reports. He told a news conference: "We have reached a (developmental) stage that today, the motherboard, its chip, the processing, connectivity, all of them cumulatively cost around $35, including memory, display, everything."
The laptop was developed by researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science.
According to Sibal, his department is currently in talks with global manufacturers about mass-producing the device, which will be aimed at students.
He added that the Linux-based laptop will have internet browsers, a PDF reader and video conferencing tools, while the hardware will allow users to incorporate different components if needed.
The device is expected to be introduced to educational establishments from next year, with the aim of dropping the price even further to $20, and then $10.
