World's largest MMORPG reaches new milestone as publisher prepares expansion pack for Chinese market

World of Warcraft reaches 9 million

Blizzard has announced that its hugely popular online MMO, World of Warcraft has surpassed the 9 million subscriber mark on the eve of it preparing to release the game’s expansion pack, The Burning Crusade in China.

The game, which was released in North America on November 23rd 2004, hit the 8 million this January just prior to the expansion pack being released in Europe and North America.

"We’re thrilled that gamers around the world have continued to embrace World of Warcraft so enthusiastically," said president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Morhaime. "We’ve worked hard to provide a compelling experience for our players and we plan to continue updating the game with exciting new content for them to enjoy for many years to come."
