Expansion adds a new world, instant access to level 90 characters and improves character visuals

World of Warcraft expansion Warlords of Draenor announced

The latest expansion to World of Warcraft – Warlords of Draenor – has been revealed, showing off improved visuals and gameplay in a new world.

Blizzard unveiled the expansion, the fifth for the game, at its annual Blizzcon event.

Taking place in the eponymous world of Draenor, the storyline of the add-on will cover events that took place in the original series of Warcraft strategy games released by Blizzard before the MMO.

Like previous expansions, Warlords of Draenor raises WoW’s level cap, letting players explore the new zones, dungeons and instances at level 100.

For new and lower-levelled players, a one-time chance to boost an existing or new character to level 90 is available, which Blizzard hopes will rekindle interaction between players.

The expansion also provides a visual overhaul to player characters, increasing the fidelity, animation and visuals of the avatars, which have remained largely unchanged since the game’s 2004 release.

Blizzard is likely to be hoping that the expansion, which currently has no announced release date, attracts players back to the game, which has seen a continuing decline in subscription numbers.
