Head of platforms and services at Microsoft Kevin Johnson has left the firm as it embarks on a major reshuffle. Johnson, whose remit included the Windows business, has been at the firm for 16 years and was one of the three divisional presidents reporting directly to CEO Steve Ballmer.
The platforms and services division itself is being split into separate entities – one responsible for Windows and Windows Live and another concentrating on online services.
Johnson was also at the forefront of the failed takeover attempt of Yahoo, and speculation is circulating that this in particular was a key factor in his decision to leave.
It is expected that he is to become CEO of network equipment vendor Juniper Networks.
“I have been so fortunate to have experienced 16 amazing years of building Microsoft’s business,” said Johnson.
