The president of Microsoft’s Windows and Windows Live divisions, Steven Sinofsky, has announced that he is leaving the company with immediate effect.
In a statement, Sinofsky wrote: “It is impossible to count the blessings I have received over my years at Microsoft. I am humbled by the professionalism and generosity of everyone I have had the good fortune to work with at this awesome company.”
Sinofsky had worked at Microsoft since 1989, when he joined as a software design engineer fresh out of university. By 1999 he was a senior vice president of Office, in charge of developing the productivity software, and in 2006 he was elevated to senior vice president in charge of the Windows and Windows Live group.
However, his abrupt departure has led some to speculate that the decision may have been spurred by a clash with Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer. This speculation has been partially fuelled by Ballmer curt statement regarding Sinofsky’s resignation, which simply read: “I am grateful for the many years of work that Steven has contributed to the company.”
