Windows 7 will give resellers a much-needed boost when it is released later this year, according to IDC.
According to the market researcher's figures, for every €1 spent on Windows 7, resellers will see a further €19.82 in revenue from services and products. That is up significantly on previous estimates from IDC.
Globally, the operating system is expected to ship 177m units between its October release and the end of 2010, with Europe predicted to see $70bn in revenue from products and services generated as a result.
"The advent of Windows 7 will bring related and cascading economic benefits, from new employment to increased revenues and investments made in local country economies," IDC said in its whitepaper.
"In this case, less than one per cent of global IT spending will drive nearly 20 per cent of global IT employment and account for a significant portion of the new jobs created in the IT industry in late 2009 and 2010."
The report is in contrast to Gartner's earlier predictions that the operating system would only have a 'modest' impact on the channel's fortunes. "In the midst of an economic crisis, with most governments seeking economic stimulus to grow their economies, the launch of a major new operating system should be considered good news – a stimulus package in its own right," it added.
