WD launches first 2TB portable drive

Hard drive maker Western Digital announced the world’s first 2 terabyte portable hard drive with an updated My Passport range also bundling automatic backup software.

The My Passport line of portable hard drives are available in white, black, silver, blue and red and start with capacities at 500GB all the way up to the capacious 2TB model.

WD also bundles the drives with the WD SmartWare automatic backup software and a hardware encryption and password protection tool called WD Security. The company describes the casing as resistant to both scratches and fingerprints and every drive is equipped with high-speed USB 3.0 connectivity.

"Our goal in launching the next-generation of the popular My Passport drives is to encourage more consumers to protect their data before something happens," said WD branded product manager Jim Welsh.

The WD My Passport line is backed with a two-year warranty and is available through the channel as well as direct from the WD Online Store where the 2GB model is priced at £229.90.
