Western Digital has launched the My Book Live home network drive which combines storage, gigabit ethernet and a home media server.
The network storage drive is good for data transfer speeds of up to 100MBps, more than triple the speed of USB 2.0 connected drives and twice the speed of other network drives WD claimed in a release.
"Network attached storage presents tremendous opportunity for families wishing to centralize all of their digital content and enjoy it on computers, TVs and smartphones around their home and beyond," said WD markerting boss Dale Pistilli.
"Our consumer research tells us that consumers need a simple way to set up a one-stop shop for their digital media. WD's My Book Live home network drive makes it easy for anyone to enjoy the benefits of network storage and delivers blazing read speeds to boot."
Built in media functionality allows Macs and PCs connected to the home network to stream digital media to a TV set through a DLNA device such as a games console and the device will also allow playing of music and video stored through iTunes.
The device has launched at US retails and the firm's own wdstore.com at $169.99 for the 1TB version and $299.99 for the 2TB version. A European launch should follow.
