TV streaming service reveals the UK's fastest ISPs in latest speed index

Virgin Media tops UK ISPs in Netflix speed index

On-demand TV service Netflix has found Virgin Media to offer the best UK internet speeds after the firm topped its ISP Speed Index.

Virgin Media topped rival UK providers with average stream speeds of 2.37Mbit/s through the service, beating the likes of BT, O2 and BSkyB.

"The Netflix ISP Speed Index is based on data from the more than 33 million Netflix members who view over 1 billion hours of TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix per month," said Joris Evers, director of Netflix corporate communications.

"The listed speeds reflect the average performance of all Netflix streams on each ISP’s network and are an indicator of the performance typically experienced across all users on an ISP network."

The stats come after Netflix recently opened up the index to additional countries, which now includes data for US, Mexico, Ireland, UK, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

Country-wise, the US leads the way with average speeds of 3.35Mbit/s, whilst Mexico lags behind with just 2.01Mbit/s.

The index somewhat masks the issues facing the UK’s web infrastructure, as the country’s average internet speeds fall well behind those of other European countries and the US.

However, culture secretary Jeremy Hunt maintains that the UK’s internet speeds will be faster than any other European country by 2015.

The proposal is set to see over 90 per cent of the UK have access to high-speed internet, which is defined as greater than 24 Megabits per second.
